Reflecting on my journey through film school, I recently stumbled upon some cherished photographs taken nearly 8 years ago. It was my first attempt at 35mm photography, a collaborative effort with a schoolmate, capturing the beauty of my flatmate, Yuka, in the rooftop garden of our Pyrmont home.
During that time, I pitched a documentary idea about Yuka's life, but it was rejected. Back then, I didn't think much about it since documentaries weren't my main focus.
Fast forward to today, and my path has led me to produce two documentaries with Nick, one of which won us four international awards.
But as we worked, I couldn't shake the memory of Yuka's dream – to build a family and embrace motherhood at a young age. When I pitched the documentary idea, I was met with doubt.
For years, I pondered the words of my documentary teacher, who dismissed the idea, claiming beauty alone couldn't sustain a story. But time taught me otherwise. A woman's dreams – whether career-driven or rooted in family – are significant and deserving of recognition.
In my career, I've faced doubts and limitations because of my race, background, and social status. But I've refused to let these obstacles define me.
As a team @beairdproductions, we are absolutely thrilled to be awarded Best Editor at the @la_indies_film_fest for our documentary Unsynchronised.
It's the third time that we won this award and the second time of this year (but 2024 has just begun!)
It's an incredible honour to be recognised for our passion and dedication to storytelling through editing. Huge thanks to the festival organisers and to everyone who supported us along the way. We are brewing for new exciting projects. Wish us luck 🤞

project takes a ton of work, time and often the effort is not recognised.
The people behind @beairdproductions work film industry desk jobs on weekdays, and during the nights and
weekends are when we work, research on the concepts we truly care about.
Today we are very
happy to share some recognition we’ve received from film festivals in the last few months.
Most importantly, editor Zooey Gao was awarded “Best Editor" @madridfilmfest for her work on our experimental documentary “Unsynchronised."
Zooey
has received awards for best editing twice before at film school, and it is always

We @beairdproductions went on a quest to the Great Ocean Road this August.
A road trip is a great way to avoid reality and reflect on the life we usually have.
It took us 8 months to do nothing about the new documentary and we finally did filming Day 1 three weeks after we got back. So the trip was totally worth it.
We hope to get the new doco out by early 2024. Guess what? It's about mental health issues again. You can see our previous doco - For Rachel Summer via link in bio.

August was a celebration month for @beairdproductions. We had a series of surreal birthday parties which included Citizen Kane, Genesis Owusu, the Great Ocean Road and Melbourne.
